What is AI, really? A jargon-free guide for mums
The AI Mamas · 5 min read

You've heard "AI" a hundred times this week. Maybe it makes you a little tense — another thing to learn, in a world that already moves too fast. Take a breath. It's friendlier than it sounds, and you do not need to be techy to use it.
So what is it?
"AI" (artificial intelligence) is just clever software that's very good at understanding language and patterns. The kind you'll actually use — tools like ChatGPT — work like a brilliant, tireless assistant you can chat with. You type a question or a request in plain English, and it writes back.
"Think of it as a helpful friend who's read a lot and never gets tired of your questions."
How does it know things?
It learned by reading an enormous amount of text, so it's picked up how language works and a huge amount of general knowledge. It's not perfect, and it can occasionally get things wrong — so for anything important (medical, money, legal), always double-check with a real expert. For everyday help, though, it's wonderful.
What can it actually do for me?
- Plan the week's meals and write the shopping list
- Draft the email or message you're dreading
- Turn the mess in your head into a clear to-do list
- Explain something to a curious child (or to you!)
- Come up with ideas — parties, gifts, days out
How do I start?
Open ChatGPT (free to begin) and type something real, like: "Help me plan three easy dinners this week." That's it — you're using AI. There's no wrong way to start, and you can't break anything.
If you'd like a gentle, step-by-step hand — and a women-only room to ask the "silly" questions — that's exactly what we built The AI Mamas for.
